ITERATIONS
Radialsystem V, Berlin

In the framework of the festival faithful! Faithfulness and Betrayal of Musical Interpretation (curator Elke Moltrecht) from November 13 to 23, 2014Funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds. The artistic research of Ensemble Extracts was supported by matralab Montréal and the Fonds de Recherche de Quebec - Société et Culture (FRQSC).

Berlin in the 90s - a capital of loops & beats: nowhere else were the sounds and architectures of electronic club music explored so intensely, variedly and imaginatively and developed to a unique quality. In this project, Ensemble Extracts reinterpreted this “historical” electronic music from Berlin - listened to and redeveloped by acoustic musicians from completely different contexts: because in traditional and artificial music from India, China and Ghana, loops and beats often have completely different goals than trance and dance, the handling of sound plays a different role, the architectures of music often want to go elsewhere. But Eurological New Music also uses repetition, iteration and sequencing as stylistic techniques. What would experimental club music of the 90s sound like through the filters of such different musical cultures? In an uninterrupted, approximately 60-minute sound stream, based on a 1990s remix set by the Berlin Gebrüder Teichmann, the ensemble Extracts traveled through various cultural landscapes of looped music in this concert, exposed themselves to intricate beats and tested sound figures and gestures acoustic instruments such as Sheng, Duduk, Oboe, Ud, Daegum, Erhu etc. can let us experience the flow, sound and feel of orthodox techno architectures in a new way.
